The Color Purple

  • New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982
By Walker, Alice
New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982. First edition, first printing with B C D E lettercode on copyright page. Quarter-bound purple cloth and cream paper, stamped in silver on spine; slightly bumped at head of spine; illustrated unclipped dust jacket; a few small tears and wear to edges; corners lightly bumped; near fine. First edition, first printing with B C D E lettercode on copyright page. An especially lovely first edition, first printing of Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel in an unclipped first issue dust jacket featuring the original $11.95 retail price. The author's best-known novel, it also won the 1983 National Book Award, and was the basis for Steven Spielberg's 1985 film of the same name starring Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery — all three of whom were nominated for Oscars — and Danny Glover. Avidly and repeatedly read, copies are uncommon in this condition, which, outside of a few small, nearly invisible tears, is pristine.
