Venice: Antonio Zatta, 1783. unbound. Map. Original engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 12 1/4" x 16".

Beautifully detailed map of Provence in southern France, published by Antonio Zatta in 1783. Numerous towns and rivers are labeled, and relief rendered by hachure. Famous for rose wine, many vineyards are depicted pictorially. Extends from Lyon to the Mediterranean along the Rhone, and eastward to Nice. Other notable cities include Cannes, Antibes, St. Tropez, Marseille, Aix, and Grenoble. This map is in very good condition. Minor toning to centerfold, and very small burn hole at edge of paper, not affecting the image.

Antonio Zatta (1775-1797) was the most prominent Italian map publisher of the late 18th century. His Venice-based publishing company produced maps that mark an important transition from 18th- to 19th-century cartographic styles. He updates and redefines the traditional title cartouche by replacing the mythic elements common in earlier maps with more representative images.
