New York and Philadelphia: Turner & Fisher, 1846. Good. Toned with dust soiling, spotting, wear to extremities, short tears, water stains, and creasing. Later (20th-cent.) ball-point pen to upper left-hand corner of upper wrapper ("Almanac"). Incomplete; lacking final 6 pages and lower wrapper.. An 1846 almanac and family receipt book for "House-Keepers" published specifically "For the Middle and Western States". Upper wrapper features a woodcut depicting a white woman cooking over a fireplace next to her son and Black house servant in the background; in the foreground is a feast of food including sea turtle, lobster, meats and what appears to be baskets of oysters and fruit. The contents include monthly calendars and information on the phases of the moon and weather predictions, as well as "Rare and Valuable Receipts" (i.e. advice) for treating and curing common family ailments such as asthma, ear aches, and lock jaw, among others. There are also around thirty recipes for dinner and desserts in the rear ("Tongue Toast", anyone?). 4to (8.25" by 6.75"), pp. [32], lacking 6 pp. (c.f. OCLC entry no. 19900716), sewn in original illustrated wrappers. Includes early ink signature of Elizabeth D(?) to at least two leaves.
