Wraps creased, dust-soiled, and rubbed with wear to most corners and small loss to head and tail of spine. Damp staining to bottom edge and margins, most noticeably on the first and last few pages. Pages uniformly toned at margins and lightly thumb soiled throughout. Offsetting to multiple pages from full page woodcut as well as decorative header and footer woodcuts. Binding firm, recently reinforced and rebacked.
A Very Good copy of a scarce wrapper issue. A collection of short stories and sketches from Twain, including the titular story, which was originally written under the title "A Literary Nightmare." The story centers on a poem Twain came across in a newspaper, which becomes embedded in his mind as a virus-like jingle. He is only able to "cure" himself by passing the jingle on to someone else, thus removing it from his mind.
The BAL describes this as a second edition, but it is likely more accurate to describe it as a second printing.
BAL 3378.
