John Woolman ( 1720 – 1772) was an American merchant, tailor, journalist, Quaker preacher, and early abolitionist during the colonial era. Based in Mount Holly, near Philadelphia, he traveled through the American frontier to preach Quaker beliefs, and advocate against slavery and the slave trade, cruelty to animals, economic injustices and oppression, and conscription. In 1772, Woolman traveled to England, where he urged Quakers to support abolition of slavery. Bound in original stiff vellum with yapp edges and spine letter in black. There is a small split at the top of the spine and very slight bowing to the covers. With wood engraved decretive initials and endpiece, printed in red and black under the care of C.R. Ashbee. Despite noted flaws, in very good condition. Measures 4.25 x 6 inches. 388 pages plus colophon. PRI/110124.
