One of 2000 copies printed at Christmas 1957 for Sir Allen Lane and Richard Lane by McCorquondale & Co., unnumbered. Small octavo (19 cm); 234pp,[1]. Boards full bound in pale pink and pale lilac paper with white printing and gilt stamping to spine. Illustrated endsheets designed by David Gentleman depicting city and country scenes. Boards generally soiled with minor scuffing and light bumping to corners and spine ends. Spine toned significantly. Binding slightly cocked but firm. Page edges slightly warped from humidity and top edge foxed. Pages otherwise clean. A Very Good copy of Linklater's World War II satire about an Italian soldier who is cowardly but charismatic. Stated as the first book "to be produced in Great Britain by means of photocomposition on the Intertype Fotosetter" without metal type.
