A German musicologist and one of the founders of the Bach Gesellschaft, Winterfeld was instrumental in the rediscovery of the works of Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), publishing Schütz's compositions in his Giovanni Gabrieli und sein Zeitalter in Berlin in 1834.
