Oceanside, California: Black Unity, 1970. First issue of the short-lived tabloid format newspaper, horizontal fold, paper evenly toned, otherwise very good. Eight pages. Quite scarce; almost all library holdings are electronic. Anti-war GI newspaper from Camp Pendleton, supportive of the Black Panther Party, published after Black Marines split off from the local Movement for a Democratic Military organization. Borrows Emory Douglas cover art; opens up to Huey Newton centerfold. Members of the Black Unity Party on base wore a Black Unity bracelet (described in this issue), which gave rise to disciplinary proceedings.
