Bound in mismatched full brown diced calf, rebacked with matching red and green leather labels bearing gilt titling to spines. Boards with light plus rubbing and shelf wear to edges and corners; heads and tails of spines lightly rubbed. Surfaces of boards with moderate rubbing and staining. Vol. 1 text block with very light age toning; Vols. 2, 3, and 4 with moderate age toning and scattered foxing. Ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper of Vol. 2. All volumes with bookplate of Ronald Paulson, leading expert on William Hogarth and former professor of English literature at Yale and Johns Hopkins.
Mixed editions: Vol. 1 is stated Fourth Edition; all other volumes presumed First Edition. The fourth volume is quite rare.
