INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Walter Seltzer -- / My old producer -- / Sincerely and with / Very Warm Regards -- / Max." "A novel about the men of a nuclear submarine -- and their wives ashore." The inscribee was a noted Hollywood film producer; the author's inscription to "my old producer" is a reference to the 1961 film THE NAKED EDGE, which was based on his 1955 novel "First Train to Babylon," on which Seltzer was a producer.
