After working briefly on the Ugandan railway he was off to join the Klondike gold rush. After fighting with the Canadian volunteers in the Boer War he remained in Africa hunting elephants in the African interior until the First World War. It was then that he perfected the use of the high-velocity rifle. During the War he fought for the British as a fighter pilot. After the War he returned to Africa and continued to make a successful living out of elephant. The Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter is one of the great big game hunting books written by the greatest of all African hunters. Czech (Africa) pp. 23-4
