Modern copy in oils by an unknown artist of the well-known portrait of Mozart by Barbara Krafft executed in 1819

The composer is depicted half-length facing quarter left, his head turned towards the viewer. He wears a wig and is dressed in a rich red jacket with decorative gold edging, a while neck wrap, and lace ruffle.

Executed in ca. 1989 or slightly earier on modern canvas. 20 x 16 inches (50.8 x 40.6 cms). In decorative wooden frame 25 x 21 inches (63.5 x 53.3 cms).

In very good condition overall. The original painting is reproduced in Deutsch: Mozart und seine Welt in zeitgenössischen Bildern, plate 26, p. 23.

"This posthomous oil portrait by Barbara Krafft (1764-1825) was painted in Salzburg in 1819 for Joseph Sonnleithner's Gallery of Composers. ... It is a tribute to Krafft's artistry that her work remains one of the most highly valued portraits of her enigmatic subject." Hutchings: Mozart The Man. The Musician, plate 15, p. 8.

The present portrait draws on authentic lifetime portraits; it is most closely related to the Mozart family portrait made by Johann Nepomuk della Croce in 1780/81. See Hutchings, plate 8, p. 4.
