Original Friendship Album / Sketchbook

  • Paris, Honfleur, Allegheny, PA , 1838
By Rose Wheatley Hill
Paris, Honfleur, Allegheny, PA, 1838. Very Good. Paris, Honfleur, & Allegheny, PA: 1838-1846. Oblong octavo (13x21cm.); contemporary full blind- and gilt-tooled roan, gilt spine in four compartments, bright turquoise moiré endpapers; [104]pp. filled 2/3 to completion with ten manuscript poems in both French and English; seventeen pencil sketches, mostly mounted in; and one original watercolor. Margins scuffed, a few faint surface scratches to boards, light soil throughout, else a Very Good example.

Handsome friendship album inscribed in English to Rose Wheatley Hill from her uncle, dated Paris, July, 1838, though we surmise that Rose was probably an American visiting the continent. The earliest entries include poems in French dated August, 1838, in the coastal town of Honfleur, though the remainder of the poems are in English, one of them dated 1843 in Allegheny. Of particular note are the pencil sketches which depict various critters (a hare, a bear, a snarling dog) as well as landscape scenes possibly done from life in France. One particularly visceral sketch shows a leering man with rotting teeth baring his cane in a threatening manner.
