Token of Friendship -- Handmade box with poetry, miniature illustrations of books

United States, 1860. Very good. Light dust soiling. Sewing tender.. A very dear token of friendship, handmade from two pieces of punch paper sewn to a strip of decorated paper to make a small box. The top lid is only sewn at the head, to allow to user to lift the top paper like a lid and read the message inside. The "lid" has a small chartreuse bow, a miniature watercolor of a tiny book, and the following poem titled "Prayer" written in impossibly tiny penmanship: "Teach me to [?] me, To [?] the [?] I see, That mercy I to theirs show, That mercy show to me." Inside the bottom "lid" is another watercolor book and a poem titled "On Time": "Esteem thy precious time Which [?] so swift [?], then for eternity, And to not partake delay." Box measures approx. 2.5" by 3.5" by 0.75
