Three (3) samples of fine penmanship/calligraphy taken from the copy book of a student at the Friends School in Providence, Rhode Island (now "Moses Brown School"). The three penmanship samples have six (6) mottos that read: Abandon evil Company; Beware of Ostentation; Nature is ever Various; Orders the greatest Grace; Riches have Wings; and Sin surely brings Sorrow. The samples are notable for how skillfully and evenly they have been done. A later (modern) pencil note reads, "From Jervis J. Smith's copy-book at Friends School,Prov., R.I.". Each measures approx. 2.25" by 7.5", and has small holes from the copy book's sewing visible on the left-hand edge.
