New York: G. P. Putnam | D. Van Nostrand, 1869. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Twelve quarto volumes; the volumes are matching in either green or brown pebbled cloth, with titling and decorations in gilt; the hinges are for the most part quite intact, though a few are beginning to crack; the rear hinge of the last volumes is broken but all the hinges are holding.~~The Nevins bibliography consider this to be “an excellent source for such material as newspaper accounts, eyewitness testimonies, anecdotes, poetry, and public documents”, adding that it is “heavy on things military”. Murdock adds to this that it is a “classic record of the events of the war as it proceeded” and that the first nine volumes “include hundreds of poems by well-known and obscure writers” who chronicle a large number of leaders and events. (Nevins II, 26; Murdock, Civil War in the North, 45). Very Good binding.
