San Francisco, California: Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939. Very good. Used, ticket stub sometime removed. Minor pinholes to left-hand side where detached from original ticket book.. Original printed souvenir day pass ticket to the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, held on San Francisco's Treasure Island between February 1939 and September 1940. This example is notable for its promotion of the "Incubator Babies" sideshow. The attraction was exactly what it sounds like: a group of actual, real premature babies behind glass in incubators displayed to the public as a way of celebrating the medical and technological innovations that allowed these babies to survive. Admission prices funded the babies' medical care and the incubators themselves, which were promoted in the press as "ethically operated". Ticket features an illustration of a happy baby clutching a bottle, against a silhouette of Treasure Island in the background. Measures approx. 2.5" by 4", verso blank, printed in blue and black. The 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition was created to celebrate the landmark opening of the completion of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. The Exposition featured arts and architecture exhibits, and a grand amusement midway with sideshows and games.
