Bound in full brown calf with gilt ornamentation to spine and boards, and with label bearing gilt titling to spine. Cracking to both joints; light plus wear and bumping to edges and corners of boards and light wear to surfaces of boards. Moderate cracking of leather on spine. Text block lightly age toned with light foxing. Marbled endpapers with catalogue extract pasted to front free endpaper pencil annotations to endpapers; third blank front endpaper with slip bearing a name in ink pasted to page. Fourth front free endpaper with several early ink annotations; page with extensive archival repairs to damaged edges. Ink annotations to title page and throughout text block, with annotations in several hands, several colors of ink, and in pencil. Text in Latin. USTC: 681873.

Together with his son, Hieronymus, and son-in-law, Nikolaus Episcopius, he established Basel as a significant hub of the European book trade. The Froben firm published many works by Erasmus, who was a friend of Johann. They also collaborated regularly with Hans Holbein the Younger, who designed a printer's device for the Froben firm (the Hermes caduceus printed on the title page of this work), as well as the elaborate engraved border on this work's title page. 1394195.
