By Dr. Joseph Skoda
Vienna: L.W. Seidel, 1854. 1/4 leather. Very Good. The classic work, which, according to Neuburger, "marked a turning point in the history of medcine; it constituted the foundation of modern physical diagnosis". The 1854 5th edition, in its contemporary-to-the-period 1/4 leather over marbled boards. Skoda (1805-1881) classified the various sounds obtained on percussion according to their musical pitch and tone. "Skoda's resonance" is an important diagnostic sign in pneumonia and pericardial effusion. Credit is also due Skoda for his elucidation of the phenomena of cardiac diseases. Following Skoda's work, percussion at last gained general acceptance as a diagnostic procedure. He was the leading clinician of the New Vienna School and one of the leading exponents of its therapeutic nihilism. Finally, he was also the first medical teacher in Vienna to lecture in German.
