By Clarke, Donald Henderson
New York: The Vanguard Press. Very Good+. (c.1939). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [good sound copy, light shelfwear, slight darkening to spine cloth, modest age-toning to edges of text block, bookplate on front pastedown (see Notes)]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For Mickey Novak / (who appreciates real / literature) / Good luck / Donald Henderson Clarke / # / Culver City, Cal., March 27, '39 / #." Sequel to the author's third published novel, "Millie" (1930), and -- title notwithstanding -- this book is mostly about Millie, too. (Oh, she has a daughter, all right, but the real protagonist of the book is Millie herself: it begins with her acquittal on a charge of murder, and ends with -- well, no spoilers here, but let's just say that her sacrifices for her daughter's well-being would have done Stella Dallas proud.) The book was the basis of the B-movie of the same name, made at Columbia Pictures in 1947. The bookplate is that of the Walter Seltzers, the inscribee "Mickey Novak" being the maiden name/nickname of Mrs. Seltzer, who was the daughter of silent film actress Jane Novak. Signed by Author .
