By John Rutter
London: Charles Knight and Co, 1823. Pictorial boards. Very Good. The 1823 1st edition, in the publisher's original pictorial boards, with period morocco spine and tips. Lovely hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and half-title. Additional hand-colored plate ("Interior of King Edward's Gallery") opposite pg. 40. 10 other full-page engraved plates throughout the text. 2 large fold-out lithographed plates as well at rear ("Part of Fonthill Domain" and "Tables I, II and III Showing the Descent of William Beckford, Esq."). A solid, well-preserved copy: Folio, deckled fore and bottom-edges. Light foxing at the panels, the pastedowns and the endsheets, mild splitting (though boards still strong) along the spine ends. Attractive bookplate of "James Proper" at the front pastedown. Part architectural study of Fonthill and its Abbey, part genealogical examination of William Beckford and his lineage.
