Songs of Russia compiles twenty-five poems translated from Russian and Yiddish by the activist Alice Stone Blackwell (1857 – 1950). A dedicated feminist and socialist, Blackwell saw the present work as not just a showcase of talented Russian writers but as a testament of solidarity with the First Russian Revolution (1905 – 1907). In the preface, she expresses "a growing interest in the great and gallant struggle for liberty which the best sons and daughters of Russia have been carrying on for years against tremendous odds. This little volume aims to give a glimpse into the thoughts and aspirations of some Russian lovers of freedom, as revealed in their poetry."

Edward Henry Clement (1843 – 1920) was an artist who became the editor-in-chief of the Boston Transcript, which ran pieces by Blackwell around the time she published the present work. Very Good.
