Philadelphia: The Penn Publishing Company. Near Fine in Very Good- dj. (c.1940). First Edition. Hardcover. [a good sound copy, with light shelfwear only; the jacket is edgeworn, with a bit of creasing, tears at a couple of spine corners (with just a bit of paper loss), and a long split at the lower rear flapfold with a related diagonal tear extending an inch or so into the rear panel]. Novel by a Michigan-born author about "a child in the Great Lakes country [who] ran away with the gypsies to escape the pain of her father's playful ridicule, and gypsy music eventually became a symbol of escape in her life." The main character's unfortunate name is Puss Halloran (and the guy she's in love with is named Ace), and the plot is described thus in a contemporary review: "Puss Halloran is a spirited little girl who grows up with unsatisfied longings and a few gypsyish tendences caused by a cruel but vivid grandmother. Puss falls in love with Ace Fleming, who loves boats but goes in for surgery because of family pressure. Wild, spoiled Ace marries the wrong girl; Puss marries the wrong man; but they're reunited after many vicissitudes. A waif they adopt disappoints them when she grows up, but the end of the book leaves them headed for a happy ending." (What, 448 pages weren't enough to get them all the way to it?) Some of the action takes place in Detroit. Note that the front jacket flap has a "Book Mark," perforated for easy removal, with a photo and mini-biography of the author on it. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.
