Quarto (8" x 5-1/2") Contemporary tree sheep, lettering pieces, gilt fillets and gilt ornaments to spines, edges rouged, marbled endpapers. Light rubbing and a few minor stains, scratches and scuffs to boards, larger scuff, lightly stained, to upper inside corner of front board of Volume 4, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners lightly bumped. Light toning to interiors, light foxing and dampstaining in a few places in Volumes 1 and 4, which also has a bit of abrasion to the head of its fore-edge, lower corner lacking from title page of Volume 1 with no loss to text. The first Spanish translation of Bentham's penal writings in Spanish, from the second French edition, Paris, 1820, with additional commentary by the Spanish jurist and rector of Salamanca University, Salas y Cortes (1753-1837). Originally published in Paris in 1802 with the title Traites de Legislation Civile et Penale, Ouvrage Extrait des Manuscrits de Jeremie Bentham par Et. Dumont, this collection contains papers by Bentham, some of which were originally composed in French, and a digest of Bentham's ideas by Dumont. This edition is rare.
