Large 8vo.; in mottled calf boards, lacking a title label to the spine; there is the beginning of separation at the ends of the front joint; there is a previous owner name on the endpaper; iv, [1], 2-919, [920].~~In the Preface, Ritchie and Cook note that after the legislature had failed repeatedly to revise the state Constitution, a bill was passed to have the citizens vote, and the question was carried: “The consequence of this great excitement was, that an assembly of men was drawn together which has scarcely ever been surpassed in the United States ... two of the Ex-Presidents of the United States; the Chief Justice of the United States [John Marshall].” Cook and Ritchie note as well that the debate over representation between different parts of the state was “maintained with great spirit and perseverance” (pp. iii-iv).
