Ayliffe, a jurist and proctor on Oxford's university court with several degrees from the institution, frequently clashed with his colleagues over internal and external politics. Matters came to a head when he published The Antient and Present State of the University of Oxford (1714), which sharply criticized the university's administration and governance and led to his expulsion from the university and resignation of his fellowship there.
