As noted by Holdsworth, pleading was a topic of "great and growing importance" during the seventeenth century. This importance is evident in the large number of pleading manuals issued at this time. First published in 1691, the anonymous Regula Placitandi was one of the best works of its kind. It was the primary source for several subsequent manuals. Holdsworth, A History of English Law VI:600.
