Publishers', or booksellers', dummies are special sample copies of books issued to canvassers, showing sample pages, illustrations, bindings, etc. Their pagination rarely matches that of the actual book to be sold. They are unique in that, they are different depending on the publisher's designs. They feature attractive aspects of the book, in this case, a volume set, with engraving prints, type set, and paper samples. Salesman's dummies also featured lined pages for order forms to be filled out by the canvaser or bookseller. Shaken boards, but intact, toning to rough cut edges, foxing, chipped and moderate wear, else tight, bright, and unmarred. Green cloth over boards, gilt/black titling, 8vo. unpaged. Illus. (b/w and color) with tissue guards. Spine label pasted on rear ep., binding sample label pasted down, included also advertisements and lined paper in rear.
