Houston: Lancha Books. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1977. "Limited Special Edition". Hardcover. [light shelfwear, minor soiling to covers, very slight bump to top rear corner; the jacket is a bit scuffed, with a few tiny edge-tears]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To / Dore Schary / with your old friends' / warmest wishes / Teddy Hayes / 6/16/80"; additionally, on the title page is written (presumably also by the author) "Privilege to Dore Schary #1." Anecdotal memoir by the one-time prizefighter (born Isidore Theodore Hayes) whose greatest claim to fame was as a trainer and manager of Jack Dempsey during the late 1910s and 1920s. Later in life he got involved in politics and public relations, and performed a number of services on behalf of the U.S. Government during the FDR administrations (there are over a dozen index references to Roosevelt). He was a commissioner of the New York World's Fair in 1939, and (to judge from the number of movie-related names that pop up in the index) to have had plenty of connections in Hollywood as well. (This probably accounts for his acquaintance with screenwriter and one-time MGM studio chief Schary, to whom this copy is inscribed, although Schary's name is not in the index.) Signed by Author .
