California, 1950. Three 8 x 10 inch photographs. Brown Brothers stamps verso. Marked on negatives with numbering; one also reading “RUBY DEE Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer”. One marked recto with copyright to United Artists Corporation. Fine. Ruby Dee (1922–2014) was an acclaimed actress and civil rights activist. She began her career with the American Negro Theatre, debuted on Broadway in 1943, and had her film debut in 1946. She won numerous awards, including an Emmy, a Grammy, and two SAG awards. Her activist career is no less distinguished than her acting, including membership in the Congress of Racial Equality, NAACP, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and others; Dee and her husband, Ossie Davis, even emceed the 1963 March on Washington. These photographs, probably acting headshots, show a young Ruby Dee smiling brightly.
