An uncommonly bright copy of this classic first-hand memoir of the 1949 Stalinist show trials in Hungary, during which Szász, who had been a communist party apparatchik since the Thirties, was beaten, tortured, and sentenced to ten years in prison. In his 1999 obituary of Szász in the Manchester Guardian, journalist Gabriel Partos wrote, "Among the personal accounts written by the victims of the Stalinist show trials staged in eastern Europe ... few can rival the clarity, matter-of-fact tone and bitter irony of the testimony of Bela Szasz.
