By Martyn, Henry
London: Richard Watts / British and Foreign Bible Society, 1837. Fourth edition. Leather Bound. Fair. 627pp. Octavo [21.5cm]. Bound in leather with gilt lettering on spine. Dark red speckled textblock edges. Endpapers lightly foxed. Extremities scuffed, exposing underlying boards. The leather spine is creased and beginning to split in multiple places. The most egregious split carries through to a crack in the textblock. While the binding holds, the book will require a gentle touch. Binder's ticket on rear pastedown which reads "Watkins Binder." Henry Martyn (1781-1812), a gifted linguist and devout Anglican, was inspired to translate the New Testament into Persian during his time as a missionary in India and the Middle East.
