Large 8vo; in the publisher’s navy cloth binding; with tilting on the spine in gilt; x, 537 pages including the Index; complete with 4 folding maps; the top is edged in gilt; some trivial scrapes to the boards; there is some wear to the top and bottom of the spine; there is a crack in the rear hinge but the binding is sound.~~Nevins states “An early, balanced, documented study in detail of the operations of Lee’s army in the year b1862; by a former officer under Jackson.”~~The book is inscribed by Thomas Nelson Page, a southern author and politician who served as the U.S ambassador to Italy under the Wilson administration. A controversial figure to say the least, Mr.Page popularized plantation tradition literature which was used to promote the myth of the lost cause. His works include The Negro: The Southerner’s Problem an essay in defense of lynching. This copy is full of notes written by Mr. Page. ~ (Nevins I 21, Howes A129). Very Good binding.
