In addition to the usual female vanity and male debauchery, this pamphlet discusses parents' undue influence over their children's marriages and the tendency to view marriage as a way to gain wealth and social status. The author suggests that the celibacy requirement for fellows at Oxford and Cambridge be lifted and that the age of consent for marriage be lowered in order "to leave young folks open to the influence of their own affections, before the pride of life had corrupted the simplicity of nature" (70).
