There is a contemporary owner's name, along with the date "July 98," on the front pastedown. From the collection of Berkeley book collector and letterpress printer John Ruyle. Winner of the competition of stories instituted by the New York Herald in 1895, written by the son of novelist William Hawthorne. A Fool of Nature has a character named Gabriel Negus, who is an astrologer and soothsayer (p. 63).
