The front free endpapers are heavily darkened and foxed, and the front endpaper has two previous owners' names (one with the date "3 November 1972" and another minor notation), and the rear endpaper has a lengthy notation. The date "February 25, 1914" has been stamped on the rear free endpaper as well (ex-library?). The text block is cracked at p. 399, but is still remarkably sturdy. Else, the pages are a hair tanned, but very clean. From the collection of Berkeley book collector and letterpress printer John Ruyle, with his small bookplate on the front pastedown. A Victorian supernatural novel of coincidences which tells the tale of two ghosts drawn together by a shared fate.
