Quarto (28.5cm); green cloth-covered boards, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; top edge gilt; fore- and lower-edge untrimmed; glassine dustjacket; 145pp; water-colour illustrations to title page and throughout. Very light sunning to spine ends, with off-setting to pastedowns and endpapers, else Near Fine. Glassine dustwrapper present, with crease to rear flap fold, and tiny tears and chips to extremities; Very Good+. In publisher's marbled cardboard slipcase, with titling stamped in gilt on spine, and light tanning, cracks, and rubbing; Good.

First published in 1911, this edition includes special contents with an updated copyright date (1939). Wharton's novel explores the love triangle between a sick wife, her husband, and her cousin through an unnamed narrator. Its film adaptation (1993), directed by John Madden, starred Liam Neeson, Patricia Arquette, Joan Allen, and Tate Donovan. [84823].
