Mehmed Süreyya (d. 1909), Ottoman official and renowned biographer, dedicated his life to documenting prominent figures of the Ottoman Empire. His magnum opus, Sicill-i Osmânî, is a monumental biographical dictionary covering over 20,000 entries, including Ottoman dynasty members, statesmen, scholars, artists, and more. Published in four volumes between 1890 and 1893, the work remains a cornerstone of Ottoman historiography.
Based on archival documents, gravestone inscriptions, and other primary sources, Sicill-i Osmânî became an indispensable reference for Ottoman history. While some errors and inconsistencies exist, the work’s unparalleled scope and originality outweigh its flaws.
The first volume features a detailed account of the Ottoman dynasty, followed by alphabetical biographies. Subsequent volumes expand on families, viziers, sheikhs, and military officials. Although Süreyya envisioned supplements such as Tekmile-i Sicill-i Osmânî and Zeylü’z-Zeyl, they were never published. This work is considered one of the most important reference sources for Ottoman historiography and a fundamental resource for researchers and historians.
