[DOMESTIC ARTS] COOKERY] WINKELMANN & BROWN RECEIPT BOOK AND MEDICAL GUIDE

By
Baltimore, MD, 1900. 7 ½” X 5” softcover cookbook with two ads laid in and numerous pencil annotations throughout. Cover separating from binding and wear around edges, otherwise good. ~~Winkelmann & Brown Drug Company in Baltimore, Maryland sold patent cures advertised throughout this cookbook, such as Dr. Kierstead’s King Of All Pain and Quintoleo, “the Great Malaria Antidote and Fever and Ague cure”. The second half of the 19th century was a golden age of American patent medicines such as these. Rapid increases in industry and manufacturing, urban living, advertising in national newspapers and magazines, and the absence of drug regulation all contributed to a boom in the production and consumption of patent medicines. Companies such as Winkelmann & Brown aggressively marketed their wares through often creative outlets, such as this cookbook, which intersperses ads for their products with recipes. This issue was in use, as can be seen from the annotations throughout.~~This is uncommon with no copies in commerce, and, as of 4/21/2025, no copies in institutional holdings.
