[VIRGINIANA] [AFRICAN AMERICAN] DABNEY FUNERAL FAN
- Brooklyn, NY: Yulecraft Advertising Co, 1955
Brooklyn, NY: Yulecraft Advertising Co, 1955. Henry Washington Dabney (1884-1954) was a funeral director in Ashland, Virginia who founded the first minority-owned funeral home in the area. The Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home was taken over by Dabney’s daughter Salada after his death, and is currently run by her grandson, Greg. Salada and her husband Charlie McCarthy made this promotional fan in honor of Henry, who is pictured on the back with contact information. On the front are pictured the McCarthy’s sons, Charlie Jr. and Ricardo playing with rotary phones, with the caption “Growing to Serve”.~~This hand fan is a simple tool for keeping cool as well as advertising the business with a rounded square paper board stapled to a wavy wooden handle, making it resemble a tropical leaf. Light foxing, rusted staples. Good.~.
