Panorama of the Silver Jubilee" -- Celebrating 25 Years of King George V on the Throne

London, England: The Chiswick Press, 1937. Very good. Minor flaws include light toning, dust soiling, a couple small nicks/minor short tears. Modern paper repairs to the scroll itself.. A wonderful color-illustrated panorama scroll, produced to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. The celebration, held in May 1935, marked 25 years of the King's reign, and was the first of its kind; Queen Victoria had only celebrated her Gold and Diamond Jubilees. The panorama depicts the Jubilee's procession, including the King and Queen, royal family (including a young Elizabeth II with her family!), and various mounted guards. Flags and cheering crowds line the route down The Mall, where the procession finally ends at Buckingham Palace. The outside of the scroll depicts the royal family waving from the front balcony. The scroll is housed in a cylindrical wooden case measuring approx. 2.75" in diameter and 7.75" in height. The bottom is removable to allow for the scroll to be more carefully wound into its case. The scroll itself is made from several panels and measures approx. 4.25" by 130" (10.83 feet long). Limited edition, one of one hundred copies produced by artwork "by Mary McNeile for Capt. J.R. Abbey" in April, 1937. This is number 58. Printed "by Collotype & Stencil Coloured by hand". This is the first version; a second was produced in May 1937 in a run of 125 copies (see Abbey, J.R. Life in England in aquatint and lithography, 1770-1860, no. 632). King George V died less than a year later, leaving the throne to his eldest son Edward, who infamously renounced the crown in order to marry Wallis Simpson. His Brother George VI succeeded him, and his daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, would ultimately become one of the most beloved monarchs in the history of the United Kingdom.
