Should Wives Work

Notre Dame, Indiana: Ave Maria Press, 1963. Very good to near-fine.. Published by a Catholic press, "Should Wives Work?" aims to educate the public about the Church's thoughts on women in the workforce. Acknowledges that "time have changed" (p.9), and that young women face different realities and challenges than their mothers and grandmothers. However, it argues that the wife's ultimate place is in the home. After all, it says, "All this does not mean that a wife must confine herself to the home and backyard ... there is much that the wife, along with her husband, can do in the neighborhood" (p.30). To women, the booklet says, "Your community is your job if you want your home and your family to be reasonably secure" (p.31). A sobering, if unsurprising, look into the Church's view of women in 1963. Fifth printing, first published in 1955. Single vol. (6" by 3.75"), pp. 32, in original pink and black printed wrps with images of common "woman" jobs: retail, telephone switchboard operator, typist, and something with a drill.
