Provenance: Sweet juvenile gift inscription of 7-year-old Aileen Wyndham Quin, future Countess of Meath, to 12-year-old Prince Adolphus Cambridge (1868-1927), great-grandson of George III. Cambridge grew up to have a storied military career, serving in the British Army during the Boer War and returning to active duty for the first two years of World War I. In 1917, amidst a maelstrom of anti-German sentiment, he relinquished his German titles to become the Marquess of Cambridge. The inscription here reads in a very labored but neat script, "For Dear Prince Adolphus, on his birthday, from his affecate. friend, Aileen Wyndham Quin. August 13th, 1880.
