Signed at front free endpaper, "To Maria Elllington Cole, Who, with her husband, has contributed much to the dissemination of the principles of the hero of this volume - and who can be a very formidable witness! With kindest regards, Samuel Rosenman." Maria Cole (née Hawkins) went by Maria Ellington following her marriage to Spurgeon Ellington, a Tuskegee Airman who died during a training flight. She worked as a jazz singer in the 40s with the likes of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and eventually married Nat King Cole in 1948. We have yet to find what trial or situation Cole may have been a "witness" to Judge Rosenman, but nevertheless, an intriguing association copy of the judge and Democratic Party activist's memoir. Rosenman was very influential throughout the Roosevelt administration and coined the term "New Deal.
