[VIRGINIANA] CDV OF MARY MEADE PLATT (OWENS)
- Petersburg, VA , 1871
Petersburg, VA, 1871. 4” x 2 ½” carte-de-visite of Mary Meade Platt at age 3 in 1871, hand colored and holding a bouquet with flowers in her hair. The reverse shows the imprint of the photographer, E.J. Reese, of 13 Sycamore Street, Petersburg, VA. Her name is written in pencil. Mary Meade Platt (Owen) (1868-1941) was the daughter of Rev. William H. Platt and grew up in Petersburg where this photograph was made. She moved to Augusta, met and married Stanard B. Owens, and had one son, R. Meade Owens. She was a very active woman, working as a librarian at Tubman High School, serving in the Philomathic Society, the Young Men’s Library Association, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the Equal Suffrage party. ~~Edwin James Rees (1834-1874) was the brother of the celebrated Confederate photographer, Charles Ricard Rees. In this charming photograph Mary shows the determination and confidence evident from her busy life. Rounded corners, some fading and slight wear. Good. ~.
