Bayard was a renowned "legal physician," or forensic scientist, of his day. He pioneered rigorous and precise detection of sperm cells through microscopy, laying the ground work for more methodical and reliable forensic science, especially in the areas of sexual assault. This research work of Bayard's, Microscopic examination of dried sperm on linen, on tissue of various natures and colors, outlines his examination of sperm cells in fibers and how he distinguished these cells from others in forensic investigations.
