  • Molina, Illinois , 1943
By Stella L. Roush
Molina, Illinois, 1943. Stella Lucille Roush (1925-1995) earned a diploma from Moline High School in Moline, Illinois, on June 11, 1943. Moline High School was originally built as a two-room schoolhouse in 1873 and nicknamed “the Castle” based on its architectural style. ~~Mounted on a maroon cardstock and tied with white ribbon, Ms. Roush’s diploma is contained in its original envelope bearing her name. Accompanying her diploma is a graduate program for the celebration of her senior class, featuring an invocation by Rev. W. A. Tillberg. Curiously, Stella is not listed as one of the graduating seniors in the program. ~~Stella married Virgil Ralph McConnell, a second-class seaman, in 1944 at age 18. An 8 ¾” x 6 ¾” Gibson & Co. wedding book commemorating its details and containing the napkins from the event as well as a clipping of the marriage announcement. Her husband survived service in the army in WWII and they went on to have two children.~.
