[LOST CAUSE] SOUTHERN HISTORICAL SOCIETY CIRCULAR
- Richmond, VA , 1873
Richmond, VA, 1873. This Southern Historical Society Official Circular was written by its President, Jubal A. Early, dated September 15, 1873. Jubal Early (1816-1894) was a Confederate army officer, lawyer, and Virginia state legislator. Early was also a seminal proponent of the Lost Cause movement and a prominent white supremacist. ~~In this circular Early gives a brief history behind the formation of the Southern Historical Society and its reorganization at a convention held in Sulphur Springs, VA the summer of 1873, and its move from New Orleans to Richmond. He follows this with 12 resolutions adopted for the society at the convention and a general outline of the society, a solicitation for contributions to its library and archive, and a list of officers. Its mission is stated toward the conclusion of the circular to “preserve and place before the public the materials for an authentic history of our cause” as well as to develop the literary independence of the South. Of interest, women were explicitly allowed to join the membership, albeit in the name of their relatives who served or died in the Civil War. ~~Small loss to center binding and nibbled corners. Tear and small loss at horizontal fold. Slight discoloration with age. Pencil annotation in small writing first page. Good.~.
