Promulgated in 654 CE, the Lex Visigothorum supplanted the existing law codes, which applied separately to Visigoth and Roman subjects, and governed all subjects of the Visigothic kings in lower France and Spain. It is also known by its Latin titles, Forum Judicum or Liber Iudiciorum. The Castilian Spanish title, Fuero Juzgo, was adopted upon its translation in the thirteenth century. Its influence extended to Spanish colonies in Central and South America, and also to Puerto Rico and some southern U.S. states. The first Latin edition was published in Paris in 1579.
