New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Very Good+. 1928. Unstated edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, light shelfwear, front board very slightly bowed, a bit of spotting on the front cover, spine cloth somewhat darkened; bookplate of MGM writer/producer Carey Wilson on front pastedown]. Novel about the collision between the romantic notions of an unsophisticated Brooklyn stenographer and the drab reality of her life and relationships. This was the first novel by this North Carolina-born poet-novelist (1893-1938), who cut his literary teeth as a book reviewer in Brooklyn and Chicago and by the mid-1920s had published several volumes of verse and also had a successful play, "Love 'Em and Leave 'Em," to his credit. Around the time this book was published, he decamped for Hollywood, where his most notable credit as a screenwriter was actually his first: as co-scenarist with King Vidor on the silent classic THE CROWD. Married since 1924 to actress Peggy Wood, he died of tuberculosis just a month shy of his 45th birthday. .
